One would think that NZ and America are very similar countries, I mean it's not like we live in Afghanistan or anything. We are so similar in so many ways, but because of that it can be harder to handle at times, even after living here for almost 2 yrs. I have looked at all your photos of your cute little kiddos in pumpkin patches, getting ready for Halloween and can feel, sense, and see the anticipation of the holiday season. Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year, the weather getting colder, colorful trees, football, scarves and hot apple cider.
You know what October-December means in New Zealand? Warmth, planting, growth, pinks and yellow, BBQ and beaches, flip flops and shorts. I am loving the shedding of winter and am anxiously awaiting summer time, but I have to say I am a bit missing the 'feel' of home and kinda sad that Laila might not ever know that like I do. Rather than wallow in self pity we have decided to bring some of those American traditions into our mixed little family. Trying to explain a pumpkin patch to a NZ er is greeted with blank stares, especially since it is a kids clothing store here, so a trip to a pumpkin patch was out of the question, plus, pumpkins aren't orange here, they are small and white and used for roasting. I went to the local produce shop, bought a white pumpkin, took a trip to the craft store, got some orange paint....and walla, Happy Halloween!!! I might have to take cute kiddo pumpkin photos out in the green garden with blooming rose bushes, but it's as close as I'm going to get. Happy Fall guys, enjoy the season, we're going out to the garden to enjoy the roses!

Stinkin' cute! Would normal pumpkins grow there? Have you tried? Should we send you some seeds?
Dear Laila,
BOO!
I am so glad your mummy found a pumpkin that sort of suited. A good bit of Kiwi ingenuity there too!
Happy Halloween,
Kian
Painted or not, that's one great pumpkin!
We had our first tricker-or-treaters in 25 years here tonight. Corey (a baseball player), Ezra (Darth Vador) and Olivia (Cinderella--who else) came to our door. I was ready with lots of treats and a fake pumpkin with a light inside.
They were adorable.
As to the season, well it's my favorite. Here on our hill the leaves are falling and the colors are brilliant and the air cool and crisp.
But I know that in a very short time I'll be craving warmth and sunshine and the smell of roses.
And by this time next year, we may not be living here on our hill. Makes me sad, but I might be living in a rut--been here for 28 years.
Love ya,
Bonnie
Marnie you are hilarious! I love that you actually painted a white pumpkin orange!
I would love to be there with you now, I so do not want winter to come and am already sick of fall and the rain that has started and likely won't stop until next July 5th! You know what I'm talking about!
